As a neuromuscular therapist this is a question I am often asked.
Neuromuscular Therapy is a very specific type of massage therapy used to relieve pain and help unhappy muscles return to their happy place, functioning optimally without aches and pains. Using targeted massage techniques, working with the client’s breath, and prescribed homecare exercises (you know, the ones you sometimes do or don’t) to eliminate the causes of most muscular aches and pains.
NMT aims to balance the nervous system with the muscles and the bones (skeleton) to naturally bring the body back into alignment, the place where it should be. We look at your posture, the way you stand and walk, and which muscles are long or short. It is used to eliminate ischemia, which is a reduced blood flow caused by tight muscles and fascia. With NMT we also test for trapped nerves or possible disc problems to figure out what’s causing numbness, pain, pins and needles, carpel tunnel problems or sciatic like symptoms to name a few.
NMT takes into consideration factors that can aggravate or worsen your condition such as joint problems, daily postures in your working or sporting environment, repetitive strain issues, nutrition, emotional wellbeing and other elements that can mimic muscle aches and pains.
The longer a problem exists and or persists, the longer it will take to deal with – one session is not going to resolve a problem that has been around for the last 3 months or more. So, remember, when you feel a niggle, deal with it before it becomes a painful or limiting problem.
Self-care is not a luxury; your body will thank you for it.
